Establishing Social Order in Multi-Religious Urban Centres of
Eastern Europe (15.-16. Centuries)
This is a presentation of the research project conducted at the
Institut für vergleichende Städtegeschichte with the support of
Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. The main purpose of the
project is to investigate how people of different religious and
ethnic backgrounds lived together in a limited town space
(using Lviv/Lemberg in Galicia, Kamianets in Podolia and Caffa
in the Crimea as case studies); how social order and rules for
co-existence were developed in a culturally diversified urban
milieu; what was the role of religion in shaping legal and
ideological frameworks for co-existence and social hierarchy.
